How did it start?

Founder's message

In my native language, Tamazight, Tafonas means cow.

Growing up in a small village, I never imagined that the cows sustaining our community were also contributing to climate change. For generations, they were seen as a source of livelihood—providing milk, meat, and economic stability.

But it wasn’t until a few years into adulthood that I realized these animals were also producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a significant environmental impact. This realization completely shifted my perspective.

In Morocco, discussions around environmental challenges—especially those related to methane emissions from livestock—were nearly nonexistent. Agriculture was viewed through the lens of tradition and survival, with little consideration of its environmental footprint. But once I became aware of the issue, I couldn’t ignore it. I set out to explore how other parts of the world were tackling this challenge, expecting to find cutting-edge technologies that had already solved the problem. Yet, to my surprise, even in highly developed countries, methane emissions from livestock remained a major unresolved issue.

Determined to contribute to a solution, I pursued a PhD at the intersection of industry and academia, focusing on ways to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from dairy cattle. Through research and innovation, I sought to bridge the gap between traditional farming practices and sustainable, science-driven solutions.
Throughout my career, I’ve had direct contact with dairy farmers, working closely with them to provide advice and organize workshops on various aspects of dairy farming. This hands-on experience has allowed me to understand their challenges and share valuable insights to improve their practices, earning their trust and fostering long-term relationships.

From this mission, Tafonas was born—an initiative dedicated to reducing methane emissions from dairy farming while ensuring a viable future for farmers. Our vision is clear: to make dairy farming both environmentally sustainable and economically viable by transforming the way we manage its impact. But rather than attempting to change the natural habits of cows, we are committed to building innovative systems around them. Instead of forcing nature to bend to our will, we seek solutions that allow us to work in harmony with it—leveraging science, technology, and regenerative practices to create a future where sustainability and agriculture coexist.

This journey has been far from easy. Transforming an industry deeply rooted in tradition while addressing a global environmental challenge is no small feat. Yet, every challenge we overcome brings us one step closer to turning an overlooked issue into an opportunity for meaningful change.

I firmly believe that the future of sustainable dairy farming is within our reach. Join us as we make it a reality.
